Wheat/Flour grinder help.
Have been searching threads, sure there is one, just have not found it so.......Looking for a good manual grinder that will not break the bank. I know how to cook, know how to make bread, have no idea how flour is made, but may be a necessary item to learn, so am starting today. Found this grinder, and wondering if any others have. Do not want an electric grinder. Are red wheat berries also where white flour comes from? is it just bleached? if easier, and someone knows where to find the thread, as I am sure this is an old question, please pass it on. thanks

Re: Wheat/Flour grinder help.
We've had one of those for years, but only use it for emergencies as it is very slow. It give a nice fine grind, but it takes a while to grind enough for a baking.
The white flour in the store has had the bran and the germ (most of the fiber and nutrients) sifted out. There is both bleached and unbleached white flour. The bleached flour is usually bleached using bromate. Hard red or hard white makes a good whole wheat loaf, but the red does have a little more gluten than the white. The white has a milder flavor. We usually do a mix of about half and half, red and white. |
Re: Wheat/Flour grinder help.
The Victorio grain mill looks just like a Back to Basics mill, which is well reviewed on Amazon (though a bit slow, as mentioned by the previous poster). It would probably do a good job for you on an "as needed" basis.

"Our Hand Grain Mill is a machine of new conception with which it is possible..."..."To obtain flour, the three rollers of the hand grain mill work contemporaneously." This sounds almost like stuff I've read which have been translated from Japanese to English. One line in the description would also scare me away "If you desire to obtain a finer flour, pass the flour through the rollers a few more times." This means that it will likely just produce coarse flour, not very fine (for bread), and to even get that coarse a grind would waste lots & lots of time (running the grain through the rollers "a few more times"). SLOW. |
Re: Wheat/Flour grinder help.
This is the best, fastest hand-turn grain mill you can buy. It's also the most expensive:
http://www.lehmans.com/shopping/prod...yword=grinders Lehman's, www.lehmans.com, has other quality mills at varying prices. If you want hand-turn only, you're gonna want one that can grind fast enough for you to use it. |

Before Walton Feed FUBAR'd (excuse me, I mean "improved") their website, they had a great webpage comparing half a dozen grinders. The only way I can find it now (their website doesn't even have a "search" from the homepage!) is to use the Internet Archive site. For Walton Feed's comparison on different grinders, see: http://web.archive.org/web/200802122.../grinders.html |

Re: Wheat/Flour grinder help.
I use one of these:
http://www.internet-grocer.net/family.htm it seems to be very well built, and I make flour from wheat berries all the time. It is also very easy to take apart and clean, I think I paid about $140. The hand crank socket also fits a 1/4"(I think) torx bit, so if I'm lazy I use my cordless drill to turn it. |

Re: Wheat/Flour grinder help.
Have a friend from collage whom I have been forwarding all kinds of info on economy, SHTF survival, firearms, pm's etc. Actually send to ALOT of people. He sent me an email yesterday saying how he is about finished with all his food preps. Also sent me a bunch of links, have not gone through all, but the below is another grinder/mill that looks real promising.
